PDLC smart film for cars in India

In cars, PDLC smart film is used mainly for switchable sunroofs, panoramic glass roofs and privacy partitions. On side and rear windows, Indian tint rules apply, so it pays to know the law first.

Where PDLC is used in a car

The most common automotive use is a switchable panoramic roof or sunroof that dims from clear to opaque at the touch of a button, cutting glare and heat without a mechanical shade. Luxury cars and chauffeur-driven vehicles also use it for a privacy partition between the front and rear cabin.

These uses sit inside the vehicle or overhead, so they do not affect the driver's outward visibility through the windscreen and side windows.

Know the law before tinting windows. Indian rules (following the 2012 Supreme Court order) require the windscreen and front side windows to allow at least 70% visible light, and rear windows at least 50%. Switchable film that reduces visibility on those windows can be non-compliant. Sunroofs, panoramic roofs and interior partitions are the safe uses. Always confirm with your RTO.
