Thin or uneven ITO
The conductive coating. Budget film uses thinner, less uniform ITO that produces visible dead patches within three to five years. This is the single largest cause of early failure.
Durability
Straight answer: quality PDLC film lasts 10–15 years, and laminated smart glass 20 or more. Budget film can fail inside three. The gap is almost entirely down to two specifications.
PDLC film is generally rated in operating hours — typically 20,000 to 50,000. That sounds abstract until you convert it: a conference room switched for eight hours a working day reaches 20,000 hours in roughly ten years.
Note that the film only draws power in its clear state. Panels left opaque by default — bathroom screens, for instance — accumulate operating hours far more slowly and routinely outlast the headline rating.
Laminated smart glass lasts longer for one simple reason: the film is sealed between two panes of glass, protected from humidity, cleaning chemicals, UV at the edges and physical contact. Retrofit film has exposed edges, and edges are where failure begins.

Without UV-stable adhesives the liquid-crystal layer breaks down in sunlight. This is what yellows and clouds cheap film within a year or two of a sunny elevation.
Standard acid-cure silicone releases acetic acid as it cures, which attacks the PDLC matrix and causes edge delamination. Only neutral-cure sealants should touch the film.
Prolonged UV accelerates every degradation mode. West-facing elevations age film faster than internal partitions — which is why we favour laminated units externally.
Exposed film edges wick humidity. In coastal or wet-area installations, edge sealing is not optional.
Ammonia and solvent cleaners attack the film. Mild soap and a soft cloth is the whole maintenance routine.
It rarely fails all at once. Typically the clear state grows progressively hazier, switching gets sluggish, and patches near the edges stop responding. You get plenty of warning.
Yes. Panels are independent, so a single failure does not require replacing the installation. Colour-matching is easier if we supplied the original batch, which is why we record batch numbers per project.
Only marginally. The rated hours refer to time spent powered, not the number of switches. Switching itself is not the wear mechanism — sustained power and UV exposure are.
No, and read the exclusions carefully. Many warranties cover only catastrophic failure, not the gradual yellowing and hazing that actually makes people replace panels.
