The technology
How does PDLC smart film work?
PDLC stands for Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal. A layer of liquid crystals sits between two transparent conductive films. Cut the power and they scatter light, so the film looks frosted. Apply power and they line up, so light passes straight through and the film turns clear.
The science, simply
In its resting state the microscopic liquid-crystal droplets inside the film point in random directions. They scatter light every way, which is why the film looks milky and private.
Apply a low-voltage current and an electric field forms across the film. The crystals swing into alignment, light travels through in a straight line, and the film becomes transparent in a fraction of a second.
Because the clear state needs power and the private state does not, a power cut leaves the film private, never exposed.
What smart film is actually made of
A PDLC film is a sandwich. The switchable core is the polymer-dispersed liquid-crystal layer. On each side of it sits a transparent conductive coating, almost always ITO (indium tin oxide), carried on a thin PET plastic film. A pressure-sensitive adhesive lets it bond to glass, and thin copper bus bars along one edge carry the current in.
In laminated smart glass the same film is sealed between two panes of toughened glass instead of being applied on top, which protects the edges and extends its life.
Common questions
What is the full form of PDLC?
PDLC stands for Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal, the switchable liquid-crystal layer inside smart film and smart glass.
How does PDLC film work?
PDLC film contains liquid crystals between two conductive layers. Without power the crystals scatter light and the film is frosted; with power they align and the film turns clear, in a fraction of a second.
What is PDLC film smart glass?
PDLC smart glass is glass with a Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal film either laminated inside it or applied to its surface, letting it switch between clear and private on demand.
What material is commonly used in smart films?
The switchable layer is polymer-dispersed liquid crystal. The conductive coating is usually ITO (indium tin oxide) on a PET film carrier, with a pressure-sensitive adhesive and copper bus bars.
Is PDLC film clear when powered on or off?
Clear when powered on, frosted when powered off. Transparency is the state that needs energy; opacity is the film's natural resting state.
How fast does PDLC film switch?
Effectively instantly, typically between 10 and 150 milliseconds.
