Handling
Can PDLC film be cut or trimmed?
Yes, PDLC film is always cut to size, but it has to be done before the electrodes and edge seal go on, not trimmed on site afterwards. Here is why that matters.
How PDLC film is sized
Every PDLC panel is cut to your exact opening during manufacture. Once it is cut, the edges are sealed and copper bus bars are bonded along one side to carry the current across the film.
That edge is the electrical connection for the whole panel. It is also where the liquid-crystal layer is sealed against moisture.
Do not trim a finished or installed panel. Cutting through a wired PDLC panel severs the electrode, exposes the liquid-crystal layer and stops that panel (or the cut-off strip) from switching. Sizing must be done before the bus bars and seal are applied.
Common questions
Can PDLC film be cut?
Yes, but during manufacture, before the bus bars and edge seal are fitted. We cut every panel to your exact size and then seal and wire it.
Can you trim PDLC film after it is installed?
No. Trimming an installed panel cuts the electrode and exposes the crystal layer, which stops it switching. If a size is wrong, the panel is remade, not trimmed.
Can I cut smart film to size myself?
We do not recommend it. Without the correct edge sealing and bus-bar bonding, a self-cut piece will not switch reliably and will fail at the edges. Send us your sizes and we cut and wire it for you.
What happens if you cut PDLC film?
Cutting a live panel breaks the conductive path and the film stops turning clear along the cut. The exposed edge also lets moisture into the crystal layer over time.
