How PDLC film is manufactured
PDLC film is built up in layers. A liquid-crystal and polymer emulsion is coated between two PET films that each carry a transparent ITO (indium tin oxide) conductive coating. The assembly is cured so the polymer sets with the liquid-crystal droplets evenly dispersed through it.
The film is then cut to size, copper bus bars are bonded along one edge to carry current across it, and the edges are sealed against moisture. For laminated smart glass, the film is sealed between two panes of toughened glass with an interlayer under heat and pressure.
Quality control at each stage, on the ITO uniformity, the haze in the clear state and the edge seal, is what separates film that lasts 10 to 15 years from film that fails early.
