Retail showrooms and jewellery displays

Retail uses switchable glass differently from every other sector. Here it is not only about privacy — it is about security after hours and theatre during trading.

How retail uses it

Jewellery displays

Cases that go opaque outside trading hours, concealing high-value stock from the street without shutters.

VIP and private rooms

High-value client rooms that switch private instantly — discretion without a windowless box.

Changing rooms

Open and airy when vacant, private when occupied. Reads as far more premium than a curtain.

Shopfront reveals

A full shopfront that switches clear at opening as a piece of daily theatre.

Projection surfaces

The frosted state becomes a screen for brand content and campaigns after hours.

Back-of-house screening

Concealing stockrooms and staff areas without building a solid wall.

The security angle

For jewellery and high-value retail the security case often justifies the specification on its own. Opaque glass removes the visual reconnaissance that precedes most targeted theft — you cannot plan around stock you cannot see.

It is important to be precise about what this does and does not do. Switchable glass is a visual deterrent. It is not a security barrier unless you specify a security-rated laminate build-up as well, which we can do — but the two properties are independent and should be priced separately.

Timer or BMS-driven control is worth specifying here, so displays go opaque automatically at close rather than depending on staff remembering.

Retail questions

Is switchable glass a security product?

Only as a visual deterrent. It conceals stock, which removes reconnaissance opportunity, but it is not an impact barrier unless combined with a security-rated laminate. We quote those as separate specifications so you are clear what you are buying.

Can it switch automatically at opening and closing?

Yes. A timer or BMS-integrated controller handles this without staff intervention, which is what we normally recommend for display runs.

Will it affect how merchandise looks?

Quality PDLC transmits around 80% of light in the clear state with under 5% haze, so colour rendering is good. Ask any supplier for their measured figures — poor film noticeably dulls merchandise.

Can we project brand content onto it?

Yes, in the frosted state, using rear projection. Shopfronts that run brand content after hours are a common and effective use.
